Åland is an autonomous Finnish island province with some 6,500 islands. It is located in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland.
Among the postal administrations of Nordic Countries and Regions, The Aland Post is the smallest and the youngest. Even so, the postal history of Aland can be traced back to early 17th century with the Swedish postal service to Finland via Aland. During the 19th century, the Russian Empire briefly responsibled for the postal service of Aland until 1917 when the Finnish government took control of this region.
The first postage stamp bearing Aland as independent postal adminitration was issued on March 1st, 1984. Since then, less than 20 stamps were issued every year. Thanks for the strict stamps issuing policy, Aland stamps are issued with beautiful designs and high quality. Almost all Aland stamps depict the history, culture, and Aland related sujects.
